From the late 1700s the red kite was brought to the verge of extinction, By 1870 they were completely extinct in Scotland, England and Irelend with only 5 breeding pairs left in the West of Wales.
Through the efforts of one of the world's longest running conservation programs the Red Kite is now listed as green on the endangered list scale. There are around 350 breeding pairs of red kites in Scotland.
